Storm spotting training set
(As published by The Daily Corinthian; March 25, 2006)
Free training to help spot severe weather situations will be open to the public and emergency services personnel on April 6 at the WIN Job Center.
Ricky Gibens, director of the Alcorn County Emergency Management Agency, said this is the first time in about four years that a SKYWARN Observation Training Course has been offered locally to anyone other than emergency services personnel, who are encouraged to undergo training at least every two years.
SKYWARN was established in the 1970s by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service with partner organizations for the purpose of training severe weather spotters in an effort to keep communities safer from the elements.
SKYWARN combined with advances in such technology as Doppler radar makes it possible to alert the public about the potential for dangerous weather situations earlier, sometimes hours or even days before they happen.
NOAA estimates that 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods and more than 1,000 tornadoes threaten lives and property across the United States each year.
Peak tornado season in the southern U.S. is March-May, while the threat is greater in the northern U.S. in late-spring and summer.

The illustrious president of the Alcorn County ARES has put together a website for monitoring the data from his weather station. The station is located close to downtown Corinth. You may click here or click the "Fred's Weather Station" link in the left column.

NOTE: At the November ACARES meeting, it was decided that instead of having an Alcorn County ARES net, we will check in with the Tishomingo ARES net. This will broaden the check in area, as well as help us to get to know our neighbors better. The net is held every Tuesday night at 8:00 PM on the 147.150 repeater.
