ARE CHRISTIANS TO GIVE A “TITHE” OF THEIR INCOME TO THE CHURCH OR GOD’S

 WORK?

It is simply amazing that in this day of good translations, commentaries and other Bible helps, that this question would be asked.

I fully realize that many denominations put a lot of emphasis on “tithing” and it seems to take a position of prominence in much of the “preaching” by their particular partisans. But what does the Bible say about it?

In the New Testament, which was written by, to and for Christians, (all 27 books); the subject is never mentioned!

There are instructions on how Christians; however, are to give of their money to be used in God’s work.

1. There is to be a collection taken. I Cor. 16:1

It is to be done on the first day of the week (Sunday), when Christians come together. I Cor. 16:2

2. The amount you give is to be in accordance with how you have prospered. I Cor. 16:2

3. It is to be liberal. II Cor. 8:2

4. It is to be of our free will. II Cor. 8:3

5. We are not to give because some law has been laid down (an exaction R.S.V.) but because we are willing. II Cor.9:5

6. It is to be done cheerfully. II Cor. 9:7

Each one must decide for himself what he is able to give. II Cor. 9:7 No “preacher”, “priest” or church body has biblical sanction in telling you what to give!

The “tithe” was a part of “the Law”, given to the Jewish nation ONLY. It was never given to nor had any application to Gentiles, (folks like us). It never had any application to the church of God since the church of God is not under the law.

The power of that “law” is now null and void, since the age of faith in Jesus Christ has come. Gal. 3:24,25

If a “tithe” meets these above criteria, certainly it would not be wrong for you to do so, but you cannot tell others that this is what they must do, according to scripture.

God knows how much you can give (see the rich young ruler, Mark 10:17-22), and accepts your best as evidenced in the story of the poor widow. (Luke 21:1-4)

God bless you, as you serve Him according to His word.
